Gilberdyke Cricket Club Juniors Match Reports

Hunsley & District Junior League

Gilberdyke v H.I.C.E. (Thurs 5th May 05)
HICE               121 - 2            20 overs Gilberdyke 105 - 3 20 Overs

H.I.C.E. Win

Gilberdyke under 15s put in a very good performance in their opening league fixture of the season on a cold and damp evening at Ings View.
HICE batting first posted a challenging 121-2 with the first five batsmen all getting into double figures before retiring, the only wicket taker was Lewis Rooney who finished with 1-11 off his two overs. Eleven bowlers were used in total with extras being the top score.
In reply Stephen Butterfield and Craig Whitehouse got the innings off to a good start with Craig hitting 3x4s and 1x6 in his 25 not out, Alex Mcconville in his first game for the club impressed with some powerful strokes and finished with a very good 24 not out (4x4s). It was left to the Bonser brothers Tom and Daniel to ensure that no further wickets fell and both were not out in the end after a useful partnership. Extras were once again the top score as the home side managed to finish a creditable 16 runs short.
Overall a good performance considering very few had been able to practice since last season and on this showing the boys should be very competitive this season.

South Cave v Gilberdyke (Thur 12th May 05)

Gilberdyke 53 All Out South Cave 54 - 7
Gilberdyke juniors again showed much improvement when they came very close to causing a big shock by nearly defeating an older and more experienced South Cave side on what was a very cold evening.
Batting first Gilberdyke found runs hard to come by with Craig Whitehouse scoring the first runs off the bat having come in at number five. His brief innings made him top scorer with 16, captain Jamie Drinkwater held the innings together batting through to the end for a very patient 3 Not Out, Daniel Bonser was the next highest scorer with 3. All the thirteen players got an opportunity to bat at some stage, although some failed to score any runs they will have benefited by spending some time out in the middle.

54 looked a very easy target for the home team but the Gilberdyke bowlers all bowled well with Tom Bonser, Alex McConville and Craig Whitehouse all taking a wicket each, but the star performance came from Simon Beevers with figures of  3-8 off his two overs, easily his best bowling figures for the club. A mention too for Oliver Starkey in his first game of the season who kept wicket tidily and took an excellent diving catch.
All in all another encouraging performance as individuals are beginning to show an improvement as they get a better understanding of the game through playing, however, It is of the utmost importance that the juniors attend the regular practice sessions held on Sunday mornings if they wish to continue with their development.
No fixture on the 19th May, Blackburn Welfare at home on the 26th May.

Gilberdyke v Blackburn Welfare (Thurs 26th May 05)

Gilberdyke 81 - 6 (20 overs) Blackburns Welfare 82 - 5 (14 overs)
A much changed Gilberdyke team containing three players making their first appearanced for the club, put up another good performance against League newcomers Blackburn Welfare on a sunny evening at Ings View.
Batting first Gilberdyke scored 81-6 despite losing their two opening batsmen without scoring. Guy Evison in his first game for the club showed his potential with a useful 17, Tom Bonser also made his highest score with 10 before being bowled. Brother Daniel Bonser scored 5 which included his first ever four which very nearly went for six, a reasonable total should have been much higher but for some hesitant calling, backing up and running between the wickets, the club coaches will be working on this and other aspects of the game with the players over the coming weeks.
Blackburns got off to a flying start by scoring very quickly off most of the bowlers, a lot of shots went in the air just over or out of reach of the fielders, however, all the bowlers stuck to their task and were rewarded with five wickets between them, wicket takers were Lewis Rooney, Alex McConville, Jason Douthwaite in his first game for the club, Tom Bonser who rounded off a good game for himself and Simon Beevers.
Despite the defeat with six overs to go the improvement is there for all to see as they begin to look and play as a team. Junior players are also reminded to attend the junior coaching session held on Sunday mornings commencing at 10.15.
No game next week due to half term.
Next fixture June 09th V Welton (Away)

Gilberdyke v South Cave  (Thurs 23rd June 05)
Gilberdyke 97-6 (20 Overs) South Cave 103-2 (14 Overs)

South Cave won

On a sunny evening at Ings View Gilberdyke U15s went down to defeat against a stronger and more experienced South Cave team.
Gilberdyke got off to a good start with Jason Douthwaite and Craig Whitehouse sharing a good opening partnership until Craig was out for 9 which included a big six over square leg, Jason continued the good work until he fell for a very good 21 (4x4s).
Other useful contributions then came from Jamie Drinkwater with 10 retired and Guy Evison with a quick 12 all in boundaries. A noticable improvement in calling and running between the wickets enabled them to eventually post a creditable 97.

The South Cave reply got off to a very poor start when Jason Douthwaite removed two batsmen in two balls with two very good deliveries, however that was the end of the wicket taking as the rest of the batsmen all scored runs to reach their target with six overs to go, eight Gilberdyke bowlers were used in total with the wicketless Craig Whitehouse being the most economical.
Overall another much better all round performance despite the defeat, batsmen are beginning to score runs and the fielding and backing up is showing great improvement.
No game this week, next game 07th July Blackburn Welfare away.

Blackburns v Gilberdyke (Thurs 7th July)
Blackburns 119-8 (20 Overs) Gilberdyke 120-7 (19.5 Overs)

Gilberdyke Won

In a thrilling contest in arguably the best ever junior fixture since the club entered the Hunsley League, Gilberdyke juniors won by 3 wickets with one ball to spare.
A sunny evening at Blackburn Welfare was the setting for an excellent game of cricket, the Gilberdyke bowlers all stuck to the task in restricting the home side to 119-8, the wicket takers were Guy Evison 2-11 off 3 overs, with Alex McConville, Chris Watson, Josh Chapman and Craig Whitehouse sharing the other wickets to fall. In the field the ground fielding and backing up again continues to impress, the bowling was controlled with only a few wides conceded compared to previous games.

In reply Craig Whitehouse again held the top order of the innings together as wickets fell around him, he eventually retired having scored a very good 28 (5x4s), Guy Evison gave him some support with his 10, however the match winning innings came from Josh Chapman in his first game for the club, as wickets began to tumble around him in the chase for runs he kept a steady head and played a mature innings. He finished with 19 not out and was helped by Daniel Bonser who confidently steered the side to victory in a nail biting finish with one ball to spare.
A memorable game of cricket, played in a sporting manner on a beautiful summers evening. Well done boys.

Gilberdyke v Welton (Thurs 14th July 05)
HICE ver Gilberdyke (Friendly)
Gilberdyke 80 All Out H I C E  83 - 4

HICE won

In a rearranged game against HICE, the juniors went down to defeat against a more experienced and older HICE side.
Gilberdyke managed to make a respectable total of 80 mainly thanks to contributions from Tom Bonser with 15 (3x4s) in his best innings to date and Alex McConville with 18 (4x4s), Josh Chapman ran out of partners at the end and finished with 5 not out.

With a fast outfield and small boundaries 80 was always going to be a difficult total to defend. Victory was reached after 13 overs with a few scares on the way. Four wickets fell, with one each to Josh Chapman, Guy Evison and brothers Tom and Daniel Bonser.
Despite the defeat there was much to be pleased about from the overall performance of the team, improvements can be seen in most of the youngsters which bodes well for the future.
